its usually because they like the warmth coming off the vehicle

Cats may climb into the engine compartment for warmth, but they climb onto and into vehicles because they are naturally very curious. Also climbing higher gives them a better vantage point to spot prey.

I think it's for the warmth from the engine.
If not it's just because they know it ticks you off.
