No, it's not a scam. I used to work for a market research group, and we hosted them all the time.

Part of the cost of the group is to pay (and feed) each participant for about 2 hours of discussion and study. Some of our clients paid as much as $250 per person for 20-25 people to come in and test their product.

(However, while you're there, it's interesting to watch the study progress. Some are designed to get your reaction in an objective manner, others are designed to influence your reaction. There is sometimes a political or other motivation behind the latter.)

At least some are, I went to one and spent about an hour answering questions and watching punch lines about cars, no particulal brand. What do you like ..what would you buy..would you pay extra? Would this punch line sway your thinking..They paid me $75.00 for 1 hour...Cash at the end of the session. I know a lady who went to one about phone service and after they asked her for OK to use her on TV for endorsement. Everytime the ad ran she agreed to $200.00..Caution..some may try to get you to buy a condo, make an investment..get out quick.
