I think his first school was in Auchterderran followed by Cowdenbeath and then on to Edinburgh University.

Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh.

I don't think it says the school name, but the second link is an interview and he gets into how he started.
