Some of you wannabe conservative actually supported a bug brother program, turning your back on our conservative ideals out fear. You actually trusted the government, because you were so afraid of the terrorists. Now, the government has abused the powers you supported giving them because you were so scared. Not only did you let the terrorists win by changing how you live your life, you turned your back on the ideals that once made our party great. Do you regret giving the government big brother powers? Or are you still so scared of the big bad terrorists you don;t care?

By the way,i am so conservative I make most of you look like Hillary Clinton in a easter dress. Though unlike most of the wannabes today, i am in support of SMALLER government, and i am NOT afraid of terrorists.

Silk Stockings
The rights the government can take from an American citizen are as follows:
#1 The right to privacy. The government can enter your home without a warrant, and they do not need to tell you. They can also access your medical records without a warrant. Then can also use "Special Letters" like the article i linked to, where without a warrant the can require your employer to disclose information about you.
#2 habeas corpus. The government can detain American citizens indefinitly with out trial, or access to a lawyer.

Did you even read the article? The one where our own JUSTICE DEPARTMENT says the FBI abused powers under the Pat Act? or are you just so damn scared you don't care?

Nice try jessica.
However, if the government knew for a fact the people they wanted to bug and spy on were terrorists, they would use the court system or FISA.

I'm a liberal but you're the Goldwater conservative that the conservatives need. You're talking good sense - and I especially appreciate you addressing the elephant in the room that it seems like NO one wants to address, which is that fear has taken over the body politic. I think this has been the most astonishing and disappointing thing to learn about my fellow countrymen since 9/11 - their fear of terrorism overwhelms their joy of living as Americans. More importantly, they don't even know what "freedom" means (HINT: It isn't the ability to choose your favorite cola from among 27 varieties of cola at your supermarket).

My father works for the intelligence community of the USA and is directly involved in the 'brother bug' program as liberals like to call it. He is one of the analysts that helps to decide who the terrorists are communicating with and who to bug. Everyday, he deals with things that he can't even tell my mother.

The fact is, the government's policy is to only bug those they know for a fact have regular communication with terrorist organizations. The reason they know who they are is because they had the international bugs outside the US and picked up communications with these people.

They are not out to be big brother, they are trying to weed out the terrorists and their supporters that are already within our borders.

And lets please try to remember that the individuals within the government entities (such as the CIA, FBI, NSA, etc) are imperfect human beings. The screw up. They do things wrong. Just because they have found evidence of the FBI abusing the pat act, doesn't make the Patriotic Act wrong. It doesn't mean the entire FBI was in on the abuse. And it doesn't mean that all agencies are participating in such abuse.

EDIT:
It's common practice to leave low rung and middle men in play to get a lead to the leaders. You really have no clue, do you?

bluesman can you list the freedoms you have lost under the Patriot Act, I would really like to see a list of them. By the way as far as the bug bother program the Government isn't interested in the common people like you and I and you know it. Do you really think that there couldn't be terrorists here in the US waiting for their chance to do us harm. If you don't believe there are very then you are very naive.

I think of myself as a liberal but I find myself wanting small government too. Maybe is not about being liberal or conservative, its about living and letting die..

I'm with you. I have seen this hideous law in practice. It is crippling and stupid and almost never leads to a rightfull conviction of a terrorist.
