Have you been following the news on this? California, Florida (that's Jeb Bush by the way, not exactly a bleeding heart), and other states have stopped executions because of all of the problems with lethal injections.
When it was first used, it was heralded as a 'humane' way of killing someone. Turns out that it's a drawn out, messy affair which can go wrong and often does.
Perhaps they sterilize the injection site because we have this myth that it's a medical procedure. And that's what doctors do when they're 'curing' someone.

This is an age old question it seems, I would assume that it would be to protect the executioner since they take all precautions necessary. If the prisoner got free and tore the needle out of him self and stabbed the warden or something? I can only think it is that or it is in case of a last minute pardon. Say the prisoner had a disease and the was pardoned after he was pricked by the needle and the executioner accidental got pricked. So many things in this country are circumstantial. who knows? But these are all my best guesses.

Because if when they perform the autopsy, it reveals some type of infection that was caused from the injection, the family could possibly sue the State for negligence.

just think at the very last second he was found not guilty or pardoned by the governor, they pulled the needle out and then he died of an infection, thats the only thing i could think up

Are they sterilizing it or numbing it?
Maybe the sterilization protects the executioner?
Interesting question.

I went to a gun range a couple weeks ago and there was braille on the "gun range" sign by the door. I asked about it, and the guy said he's never been asked before.
THAT scared me.
