It really depends on the latitude & altitude.
In central Japan and by the sea (incl. Tokyo and Osaka) in November, you will need a sweater and jacket but not a heavy coat.

There's a huge temperature range for Japan's size. A lot of it has to do with being surrounded by water on all sides, also there's the various types of terrain. Like the northern island is colder because it's further north(duh) and more mountainous. Tokyo itself is currently sitting at around 50-60 degrees during the day, and 30-40 at night.

September - November is BEAUTIFUL way down here in Kagoshima. The days are warm and the nights are cool. This is the best time for outdoor sports. It might be a little chilly for swimming, but for field games, PERFECT! It's my favorite time of year, along with Spring. But autumn is better because there is not as much pollen flying around like there is in Spring. People do tend to burn stuff, dead grass, leaves, etc. in autumn, but I like that smell a whole lot more than ciggysmoke.
Come on down! Say YES! to Kagoshima (in autumn)!

It depends on the area of Japan you're talking about and how you define cold. But I'd say it's cool, not cold, in general. A sweater, sweatshirt or light jacket should be enough.

it really depends on where you are, but if you are comparing the temperature to one in US, its definitely a bit warmer. it would be chilly, rather than cold.
