Follow maintenance instructions for "severe" or taxi/police conditions, and also change the brake fluid and power steering fluid every 30,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first.Be sure to use only name brand fluids and oils.Rotate the tires every other oil cjange and do an under car inspection at the same time.Buy the best tires you can afford and also use Wix or OEM filters only.Use OEM spark plugs only.Avoid the chains of auto parts stores and oil change places, build a good relationship with an indepent specialist of your brand of car,and shop for parts and supplies at an independent auto supply also. They'll seem more expensive at first, but the quality of the service and parts will outway any "cheap" deals you'll see at the chains.

It'll last almost forever if you don't drive it at all.
Seriously, if you want it to last as long as possible ( not forever) get an oil change and lube every 5,000 miles if you are using ordinary motor oil. If you use synthetic oil, every 9,000 miles. Get regular tuneups - once or twice a year depending on how many miles you drive in a year. And keep it clean so it won't rust out early. But first and foremost, find a good mechanic who you trust and treat him (or her) like a god.

Just keep the all the fluids changed on a reqular basis, oil every 3,000 miles, most other fluids coolant, tranny, p/s should all be changed at either 30,000 or 60,000 depending on the car, if you take it to the dealership that makes the car...you didnt say what kind of car. They will be able to tell you exactly when everything needs changed.

Ofcourse keep the fluids changed and fresh, but everyone always forgets to mention. Do everything possible to protect it from the SUN. Garage whenever possible, or buy a car cover. Not only will this help the paint exterior, but it will protect your dash and rubber seals. Hoses and lines last longer also. You did say forever. If you leave in any extreme weather location protect it from that. In winter keep it away from snow or ice and in summer keep it away from sitting in sun. Take care, hope it lst forever.

just make sure to change your oil every 3,000 miles. also change your trans. fluid too, in accordance to manufacturer's recommendations. the rest pretty much depends on the initial quality of your car.

Change the oil every 3K miles, change the timing belt now, and the plugs, belts, and hoses while you are at it. Change all the fluids weather it needs it or not....including the tranny and the brake.
If all that fails buy a subaru

Apart from regular maintenance and servicing, one of the main things you an do to prolong the life of your car is to wash it regularly, especially underneath where mud will accumulate and eventually rust it out
