When you are getting off on a cloverleaf designed expressway, can you legally stop in the deceleration lane to merge in or do you need to take the ramps around and try again?

It is the responsibility of the operator to ensure the his merge maneuver is safe before entering traffic.

Sometimes, traffic will not allow a safe merge while in that lane, in which case, its OK to stop.

Coming to a stop for no reason is an obstruction of traffic violation tho.

YES!!!!!! Stopping is dangerous to everyone around you, including you. If traffic is moving, you accelerate (or decelerate) to the speed of the traffic you plan to merge into. If traffic is stopped, you probably already know that because it took 15 minutes to get down the ramp. In which case you turn on your signal (yes, that little stick thing on the left side of your steering column) and somebody should let you in. Worst case scenario - you go around.

You're not supposed to stop while merging. This is impeding traffic.

In the real world, it doesn't matter. People think yield signs mean the oncoming traffic has to swerve around them so they can get into the lane of their choice. People believe the "suicide lanes" are not designed for cars to turn into store driveways, etc; they behave as if they are extra lanes for the turning lane.

IT definitely is not a good idea since the car behind you is likely to not stop and will ram you while you are there too timid to continue.

I doubt there is a law prohibiting it since on very busy highways you may have to stop during a traffic jamup in the road you are merging into.

I don't know about the legality of that, but for safety you really should take the ramps on around and try again.

I think it depends on the signage.

If there is a merge sign, I believe you can get a ticket if you stop. (at the very least, it's bad driving.)

If there is a yield, you can stop with no problems.

I dont know about illegal but I would run you over if you stopped in front of me. I suppose it is legal but check with your local DMV.

probably. almost everything you do in your car can be technically considered illegal. a good cop can pull over the best driver in the world and site 10 reasons for it.

Normally, no, you aren't allowed to stop. Of course, given the high percentage of ******* that don't allow room for mergers to get in, sometimes you have no choice.
