The cause of a tsunami is the earth's floor moving up and down displacing water. Side-to-side motion will not normally do it unless there is a tremenous amount of water put in motion. Landslides and explosions cause tsunamis by displacing water in a lateral, upward motion.

Tsunamis can reach hundreds of feet in heigth, but it is the volume of water that causes problems. Tsumnamis are more like floods than an ocean wave (s). Water depths are easily comparable to major floods.

Since most shoreside areas are not prepared for floods of any kind, great damage is done. Buildings wrecked, people killed or displaced for long periods of time, and sewage systems contaminated by sea water causing the threat of disease.
