Any ideas where I can find a 500V source?

I just need it for a short while... a few seconds.. like a charge or pulse of some sort.

Try an electronic supply store or maybe even commercial electrical supply warehouse type store. A transformer can "step up" voltage and give a steady supply. But, maybe you're just looking for a capacitor type device which will store up and then discharge a particular voltage.
