Why do people have to always keep things within themselves without expressing it especially when it comes to friendship, love and other relationships where expression and understanding is so important...???

you have a lot of good answers here already, but i did want to add that people deceive themselves regarding what is real and what isn't, they deny their feelings, and are just not experienced in speaking from the heart.

did someone already mention vulnerability?

Amateur Psychology but here goes......

The people we care about the most are often affected the most by what we say or do.

You can look even deeper and consider what their relationships were like as children , with parents and significant others.

Keep in mind a lot of cultures still do not share emotions.
This is very new age to most.

Some may be concerned that what they say or do may not sit well with their significant other or family member, so they opt to say nothing or go along with the masses. Thus keeping the piece.

Imagine you love football but your girlfriend does not.

Chances are you will have to deal with this it is called compromise. So your girl friend attends the odd game and you miss the odd game. You both recognize the compromise and everyone feels good. No need to complain it seems trivial.

I think we should act more and say less.

Open our eyes more and mouth less.

Some people do not express their feelings because they don't take the time to sit with themselves to know what their real feelings are. I mean most of our communication is on some superficial automated response. For example, all of the people on this forum who say I love her or I love him could not even tell why they love this person. How can you express your feelings if you don't know what they are?

People are afraid of appearing weak. Fear is an emotion that portrys itself in so many differant ways and keeping people at arms distance, is a big one. its easier for people to hold everything in becuse its almost then like it doesnt exist. once you express yourself you have to deal with yourself or someone else.
you are right that is is very important to relationships, love or friendship... just be sure you dont let that change your being expressive. i myself always have to express my feelings... and it feels better in the long run.

My guess is they are unsure of themselves, lacking confidence, or they just like to play games and be mysterious.
I use to be that way when I was young, and it was because I lacked confidence, and didn't know how to express myself.
Fortunately with age you learn so much. Some are just slower at learning I guess.
Good question!

It's the fear of what other people will think of them. But, I agree, communication is important in any relationship.

Sometimes it is better to remain silent because you may hurt your partner. If you take the first step may be other will follow you.

there are scared not to be what you expect so they don't or they don't what to hurt that person so they don't tell you how they really feel some times people have to understand that if they don't tell you they don't trust that much so don't ask
