The thing is I have a friend of mine who wants his server 2k3 to handle the IP's instead of the router hence DHCP. Sort of like a learning project, so he asked if I can help him.

OK let me simplify this. I would like my win2k3 server to handle my IP's instead of my router. How will I go about doing that?

Ok no one seems to be answering my question. I do not want the router to distribute the IP's using its DHCP. I want to do this using win2k this is a school project ladies and gentlemen. I can not have the router do DHCP I need the computer to decide who gets what IP and for how long. I hope someone get it now

why would you want to setup a server if your going to keep it dhcp ? set up a work group and network the PCs together that way , basically the same issue if your keeping it dhcp

That is a function normally handled by your router. Most include all the software/hardware to do DHCP right from the router. You do not have to have a server to do it.

A router can handle it nicely, I see no point in doing extra work, since it's a home network. And a Win 2K3 server is not cheap either.

Unless you want to set up a domain to handle everything. But again, it's a home network, I see no point in setting up a domain, then joining them. It's a waste of time and resources, and not economically efficient.

Setting up a server when you are to keep it dhcp does not make much sense.
