When I start my laptop there are a bunch of icons in the lower right hand corner that are not neccisary and it really slows down the start up process. These are things like picassa2, kodak, yahoo messanger, webcam etc that I still want on my computer but aren't necissary to be there on the toolbar at start up time. How do I remove them from the toolbar so they aren't there everytime I start up? Thanks

Start > Run - type
msconfig
hit {Enter}
Go to the 'startup' tab and disable unnecessary entries.

Though, if the setting for auto-start functionality is still enabled in specific software, then the auto-run entry will be re-added to the registry on the next reboot. If it seems that something is continuing to load on bootup that you have apparently disabled, you will have to open the associated software, then find and disable the auto-start function within the options.

Also, to clean up disabled startup entries in msconfig, you can download and run this utility:
http://www.get-in-control.com/download/

Also, for a third-party software utility that allows you to disable startups and other annoyances (unnecessary services, BHOs, etc), you can download this:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx

It includes a context-menu option to Google startup entries so that you can easily research to find out exactly what they are.
Please note that this software has the potential to make your system unstable or even unusable if you disable the wrong thing. Therefore, I suggest you are careful and don't disable anything that you are unsure of.

Another program that can do this is here:
http://www.hijackfree.com/en/
... and it may prove to be a bit safer.

*IRT Additional Details

You can download MSConfig here:
http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

Although it says for Windows 2000, Win2000 did not include a copy of msconfig. This copy was taken from XP. Place it on your desktop for the time being and it should run directly from the file. Eventually, you may want to copy it to the Windows/system32 directory and try running it from Start > Run again. Good luck.

im not a computer master or anything, but i downloaded windows defender, its like a spyware thing, it monitors your computer, and tells you what applications are turning on at your computers start up, and you can turn them off, untill you want to use them because it was really bugging me, its good, and you can never have to many spyware removal tools anyhow.
ok, ill tell you how to do it, go to windows, choose windows defender, its free, download it, watch what your clicking when your hitting ok, cause it DOES ask you during the download process if you want to download all this other "crap", and you dont, i know it, so uncheck each of those boxes that is electing you to download extra "crap" uncheck them, and resume with download.
ok, your done only takes a sec. should put an icon on your desk top or something, click it.
go to tools, then options, there you can tell it when or when not to do a scan, quick scan etc.
no no, sorry go tools, then software explorer
catagory, start up programs, and there you can choose to stop them from automaticly running. by clicking kodak, and choosing remove from start up list.
this is just an idea. works though

you have to be logged in an administrative account for this.

click on start > run type msconfig.
Press ok.
Click on Startup tab.
Uncheck names of those programs there that you do not need at startup. (These settings are reversible, if you uncheck something and later decide that it is necessary at startup; you can always come back and change the settings again.)
Press Apply.
Press close.
Click on restart to reboot the computer.
After reboot system configuration message window appears . Check the box that says do not display this again,
and press ok to close the box.

You can either use msconfig, as others have mentioned here, or, for most programs, you can disable the program from starting automatically by changing a setting in the Options tab. For Windows Messenger, for instance, you would go to the Options tab under Tools, then go to the Preferences tab and uncheck the box that says "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts".

Hope this helps.

They are couple of ways to do this (depends on each program's icon).
1) Go to the icon you want to remove, right click and choose(Exit/Disable).
2) The other way is to go through the program's menu> option> and choose not to run the program when win is starting up (I think you can do this in Ymessenger).
3) A good way to do this is to go to the Start menu (lower left corner) and choose (Run...)> write: msconfig> then go to the last tab and choose what ever program you wanna Enable/Diable.

Good luck....

hit Start, then Run, then type MSCONFIG in the box that comes up. In the new window, click on the Startup tab. This will list all programs that start when you turn on your computer. Uncheck the ones that are bugging you, and they won't auto start anymore.....

Download a startup tool from: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/start-up.html
This program will scan your system for running applications and enable you to choose which you want and do not want to run on startup.

you have to go into each individual program that is "advertised" by the icon and go into preferences (or something similar) and tell it not to come on at start up. good luck!
