For appearing busy at work when you have no work to do. My fave's are keying in on Answers really loudly, keeping some find of paperwork on my desk and shuffling it loudly every so often, looking intensely at my screen and getting up more than I have to.

I have a really long email from the boss that I pretend to read and look like I am contemplating a solution for the problem he has presented me with. Never actually read the email tho......Maybe I should?

When I want to get out the office I put a fresh cup of coffee on my desk and go, then I come back 10 minutes later. And my boss thinks I'm working but just went toilet or somewhere else in the business!

Keep busy with small stuff. Sharpen pencils. Restock printer paper. Organize your desk. Small details that don't matter now, but do in the long run. Also make a list during your day of things to do, personal or business, no matter how small and do them.

What you do is make a project for yourself that will benefit the group or manager. Make it something you find interesting so you're very focused. Then do it and when you have something measurable, show it to the boss.

I did this at one job and it really saved my bacon!! I was hired at this small high tech company (I'm an engineer) and because they were a startup, things were rather disorganized. After some initial assignments, I was largely sitting around without anything to do. Meanwhile, my manager was firefighting some issues which I couldn't help on. I needed to prove my worth! So I noticed that no one wrote any test programs for one product, so I did that. I then showed it to him. He reacted, "HEY!! That's great!! Keep going!!" I did and made a whole test suite of programs! Then 2 months later there was a big layoff!! As I walkd into work, someone passed me and wished me the best, she was just laid off!! YIKES!! When I made it to my desk, coworkers on either side of me were already escorted out!! EEEEEEEEEYYYYYOOOOOOOWW!! I ran to the VP's office and asked him to please tell me right away if I'm laid off because the anxiety will kill me (I have OCD!!) He told me to close the door. YIKESSSSSSSSSSSSS!! He looked at the sheet, put it down and calmly said, "No, you're not going to be laid off." PHEW!! Then he leaned back in his chair and said, "They (my manager and director) think very highly of your work!" WOW!! Turns out they argued I NEEDED to be kept!

How's that for inspiration?

Best,
-- Liam

I'm lucky, as if we're not given anything to do then we're allowed to just play about on the internet. If I want to get out of something I just start writing stuff down on scrap paper!
