My sister just got a Compaq Presario laptop and she has ATT Yahoo DSL that connects through her phone line, she does not have to dial for connection. She has a regular desktop PC already and it is connected by this DSL but what is her best bet to connect wirelessly on her laptop? The easiest and for a good price. Thanks.

Does your laptop have WIFI? If your laptop has built in Wireless-B/G/N then you can connect wirelessly to your DSL by just purchasing a router. The steps to set up a wireless router is very simple. Once you set it up with your DSL, you can just go into your connection settings on your laptop and "search for open networks" and then connect to your router. If your laptop does not have WIFI, then you will also need to purchase a wireless PC card for it so that you can "force" your laptop to work wirelessly. There are also wireless USB connections if you do not have a PC card slot.

You might want to visit http://www.amazon.com or you can just go to BEST BUY or any computer store and purchase a wireless router. I prefer linksys, but there are other brands such as netgear and d-link.

Wireless B ---> Wireless G ---> Wireless N

The figure above is the worst to best router signals. If you get a wireless N router, B and G will be able to connect to it with a better range. Because N is relatively new, it might cost as much as $100. However, if you just want a simple router for your connections...you will not spend more than $25 on a router.

You need to get a wire-less router with a built in switch/hub.

The DSL line will connect to the wire-less router. The laptop should have a wi-fi adapter built on to it, most laptops have one.

The existing desktop PC which your sister uses, can be connected to the built in switch/hub on the wireless router.

Now, what really matters is whether you will be able to integrate the systems. I would recommed a Linksys home router. The user guides are pretty user-friendly. If you need any help or can't figure out something, please let me know, I'll try to help.

Cheers!
