Look at both slopes: y=x+5 has a slope of 1
y=8-x or y= -x+8 has a slope of -1

The answer is 2) Perpendicular because the negative inverse of 1 is -1.

Perpendicular
The coefficient of x determines the slope of the line. In the first case the coefficient is 1, in the second it is -1. Since 1 is the reciprocal of -1, the lines are perpendicular. If the lines had the same coefficient of x, they would be parallel.

L1 with equation x + 2y = 4 L2 with equation 2x + 4y = 5 placed each and each equation in slope-intercept type: y = mx + c. If m is an identical for each line, then the lines are parallel. If the two values of m multiply mutually to furnish -a million, then the lines are perpendicular. in any different case they're neither.

y = x + 5
y = 8 - x

First, convert the second line into slope-intercept form,
y = mx + b

y = 8 - x is the same as y = -x + 8 (rearranged the terms).

So our two lines are

y = x + 5
y = -x + 8

Their respective slopes are

m1 = 1
m2 = -1

Since they multiply together to get you (-1), they are perpendicular.

perpendicular -for it to be perpendicular, the coeffecient of x has to be an opposite reciprocal: -1/1
