So what has this to do with affecting me personally? :

The appreciation that this doesn't just apply to LINEAR motion in a fixed direction, but also to instantaneous circular or elliptical motion, led me to develop a new way of teaching a major introductory astronomy course for non-science majors (sometimes so popular it had over 300 students). It was probably the only course in the world where satellite motion around the Earth was first taught before showing that the period of a swinging pendulum could be understood by insightful re-interpretation of the satellite results.

There were always some students in the class who could make this grand mental leap in the scale of the problem, which showed how well they understood what was going on,even though they were not science students. For me, the knowledge that I had helped them really understand the world at this level was extremely rewarding and gratifying. Their appreciation of my unconventional approaches to such teaching sustained me through some difficult times with colleagues who themselves avoided teaching non-science students at all costs.
