High Paying Summer Jobs?

What's the best paying job a college kid can get during the summer. What about Alaska fishing... do they really take anyone and does it pay well?

I can not speak intelligently on what good paying jobs are in your area, but I can shed a little light on the Alaska fisherman jobs...

Fishing in Alaska can be very well paying. If you watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery channel, you know that the crab season can generate several hundred thousand dollars in revenue for the boat owner (before expenses). The regular fishing season for salmon, halibut, cod, and such is no where near as profitable, but it still puts food on the table.

Besides the money, fishing out on the ocean is a very hazardous occupation. One wrong move and you're crab bait. If you get a pot rope wrapped around your leg as it goes over, you are heading to the bottom of the ocean.

So in short, fishing is big money for the owners and captains as well as very dangerous for the fishermen. If you were a boat captain, would you hire just anyone? Probably not.

They look to hire an experienced crew. Sometimes, experienced fisherman are not always available. Sometimes you might get on a boat by simply being at the right place at the right time.

If you are not experienced, you will probably only get a half share. At a half share, $3K would probably be an exceptional month. You might do a little better, but I doubt it.

Fishing in Alaska isn't a good summer job. You really need to be at the right place at the right time to get on a boat to begin with. Factor in the fact that you'll only be working 90 days...I doubt you'd get on a boat at all. Fishing in Alaska is only a good job if you are going to do it for awhile or you know someone in the industry who can help you get your foot in the door.
