Make sure you take a Japanese/English dict if you don't fluidly speak the language. Also I found it to be warmer there than here ( I went in Dec.) So bring layers.
I also found guide books helpful, if you want to see any sites. And last but not least a book on Japanese etiquette. There are things there that are frowned upon that we think nothing of. Plus there are taboos that we wouldn't automatically think of either.

Take a camera and lots of film, or lots of memory, depending on the style of camera you have. You're going to see many interesting things and you'll be glad you had your camera.
