i know there are a whole lot of technological "up to date" electronical toys out there that probably really do help kids become smarter .... but to be honest I have always thought that the toys that truly make kids think are the simpler things that test their imaginations and creativity such as Lincoln Logs, Legos, any type of blocks, clay, play dough, etc.

How old are the kids? Recent studies show that all these electronic gizmos don't help. Toddlers and younger, for sure, do best with a simple toy - a wooden train, a top, a ball.

Rule of thumb - don't let a child have a toy that tells the child what to do.

It depends on what age, but any sort of problem solving toys. Puzzles are great, even if they are simple and games that require identification and matching or grouping things.
