It seems like a lot of the questions and answers are something that were maybe randomly in a text book at that age, rather than something that's universal knowledge at that level.
If they asked legit 3rd grade questions, that 90% of 3rd graders knew, the show would be too easy.

How is the Alzheimers treating you?
It is amazing what children are taught and pay absolutely no attention to in school.
They never said the children on the show were average. It is more likely than not that they are all valedictorians of their respective schools.
I loved the part where Foxworthy says "You do know that 5th grade questions are material these students may not have taken yet?" right when it gets to the big money.
The fact is that teachers gloss over material in summary fashion and some children retain that knowlede and some people don't. It depends on the student.
I'm thinking you barely remember the names of the kids in your class right now.
You went on to study other things and that has since cluttered up your mind and created a hierarchy of knowledge in which "When was Abraham Lincoln elected?" (1859) is not important. That is right the election was decided before the year he took office began.
And remember the sides to e trapazoid or a rhombus is not that amazing since there is a rule that says answer four unless it ends in "agon" or is a circle, square, or triangle.
Children still get Columbus day off.
They aren't taught much more than Cumulus or Stratus in the way of clouds.
Geography, well that woman was just sad to forget about Alaska and Hawaii.
Everyone should know the Constitution.
I mean really "How many e's are in Pledge of Allegiance?", "Count the pronouns in this sentence...."; "What month ends Summer?"
It would be sad to not expect children to know this stuff.
The toughest question they asked was "What is the periodic sign for sodium?" And I am sure you learn the first thirty elements by grade five. They teach you that one just to teach you what salt is.
Believe me they could make this a lot tougher.
Do you remember your music lessons?
How is your punctuation?
How much is a billion billions?
Recite the Preamble to the Constitution?
Before Plymouth what Colony was founded?
Who was the 17th president of the United States?
Who named 12 inches to be a foot?
Do you see what I mean?

Well i'm in fifth grade, I watch the show, some of the questions ARE hard to me. I think they use the smartest kids in the class for the show? I'm not sure but yes some questions are quite hard. They think adults will watch it (and they do) and well they probly make those questions because they haven't done that stuff in so long they forgot about it. Good question i'm gonna give you a star.

I think everything is right on with that program. I love it. The only problem I have is that some of the people are stupid about picking out which questions to do. Don't you think you should start with the hard ones and end with the easy ones? It makes more sense. Your more likely to answer the 1st - 3rd grade questions easier than the 4th and 5th grade questions. Just my opinion though.

I actually do remember learning about that stuff in grade school. You just don't think that stuff after you have learned it, the last time I even thought about that junk was in the grade school when I was being taught, I haven't used it since, so I have no idea what the answer are. I mean last night one of the questions was what year was Lincoln president, and honest to God I thought it was sometime in the 90's. Needless to say everyone sitting around me thought I was the biggest idiot ever, but oh well.

It's all scripted garbage anyway. Several of the "contestants" on the show have been identified as child actors.
