My daughter has a very white tongue, at first the doctors said it was just milk, after 2 months it did not change so the doctors then concluded it might be thrush. They gave me medication but it didn't change anything. I am breastfeeding, has anyone else experienced a white tongue not due to thrush?

She does not have any white patches on her gums or cheeks, my breasts feel fine, and she has had a white tongue since the first few days in the hospital.

Is the inside of her mouth and the undersides/edges of her eyelids a healthy pink or kind of pale? Could be anemia.

This really does sound like thrush, but if the baby is not having a hard time nursing, is gaining weight well and does not seem to be in discomfort, she may not have thrush. She may just have milk deposits on her tongue. Nystatin should work very quickly if it is thrush. Are your breasts more tender than normal? Hot? Painful or itchy? If so, you probably have thrush and could be passing it to the baby over and over. Be careful about trying to "clean" the baby's mouth as you could introduce more bacteria. You could consider taking her to your family dentists office, as they are experts in the mouth. Good luck!

If you can scrape a little of the white off the baby's tongue (like with your fingernail) it's more than likely not thrush.
Also, thrush doesn't always stay confined to the tongue-- if you see white spots appear on the inside of the cheeks or gums, you should see your pediatrician, because it is probably thrush.

Hi there;
Thrush cannot be lifted or scraped off the tongue. Gently try to do that with your fingernail or tongue depressor. If it lifts off it is definitely not thrush.
If the baby is drinking formula, sometimes milk can actually coat the tongue. Sometimes illness can produce a white coating on the tongue.

My daughter had thrush on her tongue as well, but the white was also spotted on the inside of her cheeks and lips. If her tongue is white it could be from the milk, but only if it is not thick and can easily be wiped off. My daughters was so thick it looked like cheese. I treated hers with probiotics-acidophilus, we both took it.

You said your breast feeding right? Did the Doctor give you cream for your nipples. I know my DD had thrush at 2 weeks of age and the Doctor gave me meds for her and cream for my nipples and told me it was very importnat to treat the breast because that is likely where the yeast infection is coming from and if I didn't my Daughter would just get another yeast infection

yes this is a sign of thrush. The baby might have alot of yeast in his/her mouth from you breast feeding. Just continue to use the medicine the doctor gave you and it should help if not. Talk your child back to it's doctor, it might have more serious type of infection.

Adults with a white tongue can be suffering from slight dehydration. I've had them check me in the e.r. that way? Good luck.
