As a former paranormal investigator, let me congratulate you on starting in this field of research! It requires dedication though, because it's possible to go weeks or months without any solid discoveries. As for EVP recording, here are some general tips that can help.

1. Use a digital recorder if possible. If you must use an analog tape recorder, use an external microphone. Using the internal microphone on a tape recorder will pick up the noise of the motors, spoiling your recording.

2. Perform persistent recordings. At the same time every day, do a recording. The theory behind this is that if there are spirits present, they will learn that you're always there at that same time, and can essentially make appointments with you.

3. Try a question and answer session, allowing 10 to 30 seconds between questions in which to recieve an answer.

4. Sometimes white noise in the background can help. You can buy a white noise CD on the Internet, or just run a faucet in the background. The theory behind this is that spirits find it easier to compress background sound in order to form a "voice", and that it's extremely difficult for them to actually generate sound.

You just have to be patient though. Personally, I got lucky and recorded an EVP on my very first recording session. (A class A EVP that clearly says "Oh..shut up..") However in 2 years, I've only gotten 2 other EVPs, both class B.

(Class A: a clear, audible voice. Class B: Clearly a voice, but difficult to understand. Class C: Non-voice sounds, like grunts or groans.)

First of all, this question should probably be in the Religion and Spirituality section. I do not know of any scientists that say that EVP is showing communication with the dead. In fact, I have heard plenty of scientists say that it is nothing more than your brain playing with you. There are even some people who say those amazing recordings are either odd snippets caught from broadcasts of some sort or are complete frauds to begin with.

Take for instance. One of the common phases these tapes say is "Go away! Go Away!" or some other version of a dead person trying to get the people to leave. If this is a true tape and the ghost is in the room trying to get people to leave, then you should be able to get that ghost on every recording in that room (unless of course ghosts take time off every now and then and go on vacation).

The "study" of ghosts is not scientific. Why? Because nothing is measureable. Science needs to measure something somehow before it can study it. Science has shown for the past 100 years that there is nothing measurable in these ghost occurances. Also, repeatability (something very precious to science) also lacks with these ghost encounters.
