Carrots, melon, banana, strawberries, grapes... any of those will be ok. They may be pickey about what they like. I also feed mine Cheerios. They love them!

Just give them a little scrap or bit of whatever you're eating for dinner before you cook it.

My rodents got the ends of carrots, celery, etc. When I ate frozen vegetables they got a few pieces thawed. It's not that particular.

My rats were partial to apple peels and cores. When I ate grapes, the vermin got a grape apiece.

I gave them little bits of any fruit or vegetable I ate. Just don't feed them too much of it or they'll get the runs. They aren't really cut out to eat fruits and vegetables as their primary diet--they're geared more for grains and seeds.

Holly,
Your gerbils will eat anything that you will and several things that you won't.. Don't worry about giving them "proper" food, just share what you have. Gerbils are fine pets and relatively easy to keep. Personally, I prefer them to hamsters..
