follow the instructions and pick the date and the computer will backup to that date - then restart and tell you if it was successful or not.

Goto: Start > (ALL) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then, choose "Restore to an earlier time" and look for a date on the calendar that is in BOLD typeface and choose a date that is a few days before your PC tanked.
Follow the prompts and it may fix things for you.
If you mean a real BackUp and you haven't done one previously, you are beat.
To learn more about doing a backup, google /yahoo search for: Windows XP Backup. XP does include a free utility, so check the Microsoft links first.

It sounds like you are asking about System Restore, which restores the system to an earlier date. If so, click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. You can only pick one of the dates that is outlined in bold black. Select that date and let it restore. What this will do is remove any downloads you have done between now and the restore date. It will not affect documents you have worked on or saved.
Just follow the prompts to complete this.

It should be under Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Find a checkpoint before your computer started having whatever problem you want to get rid of, and, if you're lucky, it should be fine. My computer sometimes has trouble with it, though.
Assuming you don't mean "How do I adjust the clock?".
