Don't think it's going to be much of an issue as the show is ending. There is only part of the last season to go, and then goodbye show.
And, if it were real, I think not. Somethings are better off not open to the public. They have a bad way of not dealing, or wanting to take over, as exhibited by the Senator.

I believe they explore that option in the last season before they started the Atlantis series.
The problem is that the stargate gets used by another planet to change the people on Earth to where they were barely human.
So, they decide to keep the stargate a secret for global security reasons.

If something like the Stargate was real, it shouldn't be made public simply because the public en masse is idiotic, and that would create problems because some idiot would try to blow it up or something "in the name of God".
