Hey, congrats big time on doing it the right way! Thinking about it BEFORE you buy the fish!
Personally, I think a 55 makes a great planted tank with some various tetras and a couple of pair of apistogrammas and a few cory cats, but that's just me.

Do a tropical non-agressive tank. You can throw in a bunch of schooling fish.. some mollies, guppies, frogs, plants. An Oscar won't like being in a 55 gallon after so long. They're jumpers and will jump out of the water if they don't like the atmosphere. You need lots of space for an Oscar... and the only other fish you could add would be an already large sized plecostamus. Oscar tanks get dirty fast, too because of what they eat. Better be ready for lots of maintanence.

i personally have a 55 gal tank. i have 2 bigggg oscars and one baby and a jack dempsy (also big), red devil, a convict, and a Severum Tetra! and feeder fish (minnows that of course dont last along with the feeder goldfish) and we have PLENTY of room for more fish. Oscars dont need alot of attention. just make sure that if u put little fish in your tank they are GONE! Oscars will eat anything. we had crabs in our tank and last night the oscar actually ate the crab. but oscars are good fish.

A 55 gallon tank is big enough to hold a lot of fish, but not an oscar, I'm afraid. You could get away with it if you really want to, but bear in mind that an adult oscar can grow to be longer than your tank is deep (that is, from the front of the tank to the back of the tank), and a oscar is really suited to nothing less than 75 gallons (per oscar). If you do end up going with an oscar, please don't forget to do weekly water changes, because the water will get dirty more quickly.
But since you're open to other suggestions :)
If you're into cichlids, how about a group of peacock cichlids, or other malawi cichlids?

Or if you're into plants, you could do an angelfish or discus community, with 4-5 angels OR discus:

And a school of tetras, like cardinal tetras:

Those would be my suggestions.
Good luck with your new tank!

I think Oscars are very aggresive species of fish. I would suggest you set up a peaceful community tank and/or just have one Oscar in you 55g tank.

Oscars are fun but need big tanks. They can be taught to eat from your fingers (especially goldfish and worms), and they will learn to recognize you and other people. I have two 55's , one has dozen discus and the other one has two stingrays which are also fun like oscars.

We had Tiger Oscars, and we were totally unprepared for them, and they were NIGHTMARES! My dad wanted them because they eat feeder fish, and they grey from silver dollar size, to nearly 12 inches in a few months, and they stunk up my house because you have to clean the tank more often than usual. We had to give them to a pet shop.
Try something else first. Something easier to take care of.

Oscars need special care & attention. Please be sure to do your research. Oscars in a 55 gallon tank is a great sized tank for the oscars to start off in.
Attached please find a link for most if not all information you may need to start your aquarium look under American Cichlid:
