Dan:

Yes, there is a unit of Civil War Re-enactors emulating the Newton's 8th Arkansas Cavalry (although the re-enactors are from both Arkansas and Missouri. )

Here is some data from their website about the original unit, and the re-enactors
For further information, contact Capt Ron Talburt, at his address at the bottom of this article, which I found on the internet.

Company G, Newton's Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry was originally Company I, 4th Regiment (Burbridge's) Missouri Cavalry. The regiment was designated at various times as Newton's Regiment Arkansas Cavalry; and at the same time it was known as 5th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry and 8th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry.

December 1861

The 4th Cavalry Regiment (Burbridge's) assembled with Preston's Missouri Cavalry Battalion, and consisted of men from the Missouri State Guard and Barton County. The unit served in the Trans-Mississippi Department and was attatched to Shelby's, C. Green's and J.B. Clark's Brigade. It participated in Marmaduke's expedition into Missouri, fought in various conflicts in Arkansas, and shared in Price's Missouri operations.

Spring 1862

The 5th Cavalry Regiment was mustered in with Col. Robert C. Newton in command. The regiment was at Shiloh and Corinth in 1862, then it was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department until the end of the war. (Morgan's Regiment was organized to suceed Newton's Fifth, but did not bear a regiment number).

Late 1863

Newton's Arkansas Cavalry Regiment was formed from men in and around Hempstead County, Arkansas. Like most Civil war units, Newton's frequently bore alternate designations derived from the unit's commanding officer, or from an individual commanding a detatchment of the regiment at some time or place.

The Reenactment Company

Newton's 8th is today under the command of Captain Ron Talburt, a direct decendant of one of Newton's troopers. Captain Talburt may be reached at: Box 3199 Springfield, MO 65808.
