First off, breed is used inappropriately here. Breed is varieties of the same species, like dogs. Your question should ask "what is your favorite species (or even type) of fish?"

My answer is cichlids, specifically, African mbuna cichlids. More of a general category that a species type but close enough. They are very bright, colorful and active. However you do have to have a big enough tank to handle a community of them. I keep yellow labs, rusties, M. cyaneorhabdos, Lemon Jake peacocks (not mbuna but peacocks) and a Lake Victoria cichlid.

Hands down is the Synodontis Granulosus, with Syno Multipunctatus in a close 2nd. My group of 10 Clown loaches would be 3rd. For Salt water it would be Dwarf Zebra Lionfish, very colorful. I still prefer FW over SW.

I'd have to say Porcupine Puffers, not only do are they smart, adorable, you can train them to be petted and even hand fed. They're just like a dog engulfed in water.

They have the best personality by far.

salt water.

It changes for me from time to time. Right now it's some apistogrammas and the freshwater sting rays I'm trying to breed. At one time it was bettas... another time it was Killifish and for a while I had almost nothing but different livebearers. I guess I can't pick just one kind.

I only have any firsthand experience with tropicals and goldfish. I love goldfish but don't have the room for a tank for them right now, so my current favorites are definitely cories, which are tropicals, and the most lively, playful, adorable little things.

By far, that's dario dario aka Scarlet Badis.

They're itty fish with big personnalities.

My runner up favourite would be anglefish and discus.

All of the above are warm, fresh water fish.

For saltwater, my favourites would be watchman gobies, and mandarin dragonets (who can resist those?)

I love my Koi's outside, I like my puffers and eels inside salt. It is difficult since they all have their own personality to really choose a favorite.
