I live near Cheraw, near Hartsville, SC. The only scorpion found in this area is Vaejovis carolinensis, a small, blackish-brown species, and they aren't common. Many people here in the South erronously refer to lizards, especially the Broadhead Skink, as "scorpions", and will argue with you till they're blue in the face that these animals are deadly! We do not, of course, have any venomous lizards in South Carolina.
If you really want to find real scorpions here, be aware that they are small(often no more than one inch total lenth)and dark, and they are nocturnal. They tend to live in old woodpiles and underneath logs, and can be really hard to see. The best way to see them is with the use of a portable black light, at night, since all scorpions, no matter how small, will fluoresce bright blue-green under a black light. V. carolinensis is not considered a dangerously venomous species, but they are hot-tempered little buggers, and do pack quite a painful wallop for something so small, and their venom can cause a nasty headache that can last for several hours to a few days. I've been stung twice by this species, and it's not something I really would want to go through again.

Well, take the car and drive downtown at about 4pm, and go to the place they call a pet store. They breed these things to be a lot more docile than a wild caught thing, and how would you feel if you were free and someone stole you and made you a pet? It may sound nice to be fed and watered and cared for and to not have to worry about being eaten, but its not good for the health of the animal.
Also, for your safety, dont go chasing scorpions. Some can kill a human in minutes. And if you get one of those, I feel sorry for you.
Please dont take animals from the wild, its hurting their chances of survival as a species, and if you love scorpions as you must, you would buy from a breeder or dealer, and leave the ones you find where you find them.

You can catch scorpions most of the year EXCEPT winter. Try under old logs, rocks and trash.
