What is needed for baby and what is needed for mommy?

You really only need a couple minutes for your bag. You need slippers, a good nursing bra, socks, the "take-home" outfit for the baby, maybe a magazine or two. The hospital provides everything else. They give you gowns to sleep in, they give you special underwear, they give you pads, diapers, lotions, wipes, baby gowns, food for you and hubby ... everything. Good luck and congratulations!

I had to stay in the hospital for 5 days so I packed everything I needed to stay comfortable, sweats, socks, slippers, scrunchies, shower stuff, toothbrush and toothpaste because the hospitals isn't that great, a robe, and for my baby, i took a couple of onesies, a couple of sleepers and a couple of paiers of socks, a car seat, and a warm blanket. If I had only had to stay there overnight, I would've only brought an outfit to go home in and extra clothes for the baby. I wouldn't recommend taking a magazine, because are you honestly going to be looking at a magazine when you could be holding your beautiful new baby? I sure didn't.

I would take a light robe and sleepers. Wear the hospital gown and the hospital staff will supply the rest of the stuff for you. As for the baby, a nice going home outfit to get their picture taken in and a blanket. You don't need alot. Contact case if you were contacts. Enjoy!

Infant car seat
Two to three newborn diapers
Going-home outfit (a good choice is a one-piece stretch suit)
Receiving blanket
Socks or booties
Cap or bonnet

For mom
A going-home outfit. Forget about making a fashion statement. No matter how much you'd like to squeeze back into your regular blue jeans, it's probably not going to happen. Bring something loose fitting and easy to put on. Remember to bring something loose fitting and easy to put on, plus some flat-soled shoes.
2-3 nursing bras, breast pads, sanitary pads (buy the super absorbent for the first few days), and several pairs of roomy underwear (if you are having a c-section make sure to bring panties that are high like granny panties, you don't want to go home in what the hospital gives you).
A bathrobe, slippers (with nonskid bottoms), a couple pair of socks, and two to three nighties that are easy to open if you plan to breastfeed.
toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, lotion, face creams, deodorant, and, for those who feel naked without it - makeup.
A portable CD player, Walkman® or book for relaxation.
Your birth plan, if you have developed one.
A camera/video camera, for someone to document the main event. Make sure ahead of time that this is in line with hospital policies.
Phone numbers of family members and friends you'll want to call.

For your partner or family member

Clothes, books, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo.

What to leave at home
Jewelry or other valuables
Cash, credit cards

I didn't use anything I took but my socks, an outfit to go home, baby's outfit, the car seat, my toothbrush and toothpaste and my nursing bra....they provide everything you need and they will have baby magazines you can read and take home, and they send alot of stuff home with you. They have these cool sexy mesh panties that I wore the whole time so I didn't ruin my own. They told me to take everything I wanted except their linens. I ended up with a receiving blanket anyways......My labor went so fast I barely got the epidural before I started pushing and after that I had soooooo many people there that I didn't have time to even look in my bag until right before I went home.

on top of that you will also probably use a little towel as a cold compress and to clean your face. Make sure it is colored so it does not get mixed up with laundry towels. You probably want to take a tooth brush and toothpaste cuz youll probably be there a while. Bring a few things that might help you through labor...like lotion for massage and tennis balls or a massager for your back. If you are going to listen to soothing music then bring that as well. Perhaps you can bring something to put in your room as a focal point so that you can concentrate when you push and just focus on that one thing. Also dont make sure your partner brings a bag of his own because he will be there for a while too. Also you will want to bring some sanitary napkins.

Everyone else pretty much summed it up, but one thing I highly advise packing for the baby is wipes. I didn't with my son, and when I asked for some at the hospital, they wet a few paper towels and told me to use them. Needless to say, they did not work too well. So this time, I packed wipes in my daughter's bag. And for you, pack your own pads. The hospital ones are very bulky, so I would recommend ultrathin overnite or long pads with wings. Always (especially the ones with the wipe attached) and stayfree are good ones.

Baby: Carseat (not in bag, obviously, but have to have before you leave)
outfit for pictures
outfit to wear home
thick blanket or snowsuit....if cold outside to help shield from weather.

(they give you diapers, wipes, lotions, aspirator, etc)

I brought my daughter's scrapbook, because I wanted her first footprints in there.

Mommy: nursing bra
lotion
your own pillows...trust me on this one!
something to hold your hair back
shower essentials(they would probably give some, but I wanted my own)
camera AND batteries :)
a few movies and maybe a book or magazine to keep you entertained(never thought I would need this, but I had a 29 hour labor before finally having a section)
clothes to wear home from the hospital...something stretchy
underwear that you don't care about

and any other personal touches you feel that you need. they give mommy pads, breast creme if you ask, you can use the hospital pump(if breast feeding), etc.

BEST OF LUCK!!!!!

I seriously overpacked. Next time I'll cut it down considerably.

Baby:
outfit for hospital pictures
receiving blanket
2 sleepers
bottle (if you're planning on bottlefeeding)
infant carrier

Mom:
pajamas
maternity outfit to wear home
extra socks
house slippers
extra-absorbency pads
DVDs/CDs (if those items are available at hospital)
bottled water (if there's a kind you prefer)
canned broth (the stuff at the hospital is awful)

I wound up being sent home with a ton of stuff - diapers, wipes, diaper bag, formula, bed pads (for me), to name a few. I'd suggest calling the hospital to see what they send home with you so you don't overpack.

I way over packed when I went in. I would only bring toiletries for yourself and an outfit to wear home as well as a bath robe to lounge in. I wouldn't bother with any of your own PJ's, use the hosptial gown, it is easier for breast feeding and you are bleeding, might as well ruin their stuff. For the baby bring about 4 pairs of PJ's and an outfit for them to wear home, the hosptial will have all the diapers, wipes, cream and anything else you may need. They will charge you for these things regardless so you might as well use them, also bring home whatever you don't use that they give you it is yours. Good luck
