Yes it is true that a Regular PC can be setup as a Server, but only to a limited extent. The drivers and Functions of File access are very different, since many people can access a server, but try running your PC as a Server under XP Pro, even using the IIS 5.5 or 6... it runs dreadfully slow when you access it.
The Biggest Issues on a Server can be ports and style of access. Security is very different on a server.

A server is a computer system that provides services to other computer systems—called clients—over a computer network. The term server can refer to hardware (such as a Sun computer system) or software (such as an RDBMS server).

Servers occupy a place in today's world that was occupied by services from other computers on the network. Many servers are dedicated to this but some may also be used for other purposes, particularly when the demands placed upon them as servers are not high. For example, in a small office, a large desktop computer may act as both a workstation for one person in the office and as a server for all the other computers in the office. The term 'Server' originates from the word 'Serve', therefore this computer system is mainly serving the whole network in some way, either by printing jobs for several users, or acting as a file server for applications that online terminals could access. The name 'Server' is another term given to 'Host computer'.

A server is the system which takes all the load of the network shared resources of the people its like all the data is put on the server and all the people log on to their serve and take the data when ever they want it hardware is different from a normal PC and its security level is also very good than a normal computer.

yes there is a difference between server & a normal computer. server is use for (centralised network) this means it is use for sharing the network resources for eg: if u r running a company and u r having 100 computers u have to connect then u have to make a server first with operating systems like windows 2000 or windows 2003 this will help u to connect the computers because of this u can share files, folders, etc .And normal computers which u r using in ur home .This not requires a server operating sys u can use win xp,win 98,

like said before, any computer can be setup as a server... but then... you have seen it... server are normally more expensive than regular computers, reasons:

-operating system: a server class OS will be able to "dominate" other computers to the point where these workstations, will be allowed to do only what the server allowes them to do, that is why is called a "Domain"

- hardware: normally a server will have more resources than the workstations because it will supply the workstations with disk space (mainly) so a good server will have SCSI drives, that are faster than normal IDE and ATA drives.

- a good server will have RAID capabilities, because you need mirroring so your data will have an automatic backup in case a hard drive crashes.

- normally the server uses ECC memory (error correction)

- a good server will have tape backup systems

-once the server is up an running, you normally will not install any programs in it. you use a workstation.

Servers are physically similar to other general-purpose computers, although their hardware configurations may be particularly optimized to fit their server roles. If they are optimized for server role, then their hardware could often be very different from that used on desktop computers and workstations.

Servers should not be confused with mainframes, which are very large computers that centralize certain information-processing in large organizations and may not act as servers in addition to their other activities. Many large organizations have both mainframes and servers, although servers are usually smaller, much more numerous and less centralized than mainframes.

Servers frequently host resources that they make available on a controlled and shared basis to client computers, such as printers (print servers) and file systems (file servers). This sharing permits better access control (and thus better ) and can reduce costs by reducing duplication of hardware.

Personal computer made for use on a desk in an office or home and is distinguished from portable computers such as laptops or PDAs. Desktop computers are also known as microcomputers. There are four types of desktop computers: home computers, or personal computers; workstations, Internet servers, and special communications computers.

Desktops are currently the most affordable computers and ubiquitous in businesses, schools, and households; they are used for performing office tasks, organizing digital photos, video editing, and Internet access. Nearly all desktop computers are modular, with components that can easily be replaced or upgraded.

A server is generally dedicated to hosting files, program back-ups, internet access and security for a group of workstation "normal" computers.

They handle a lot of traffic, so they usually have processors that are designed to be server specific. They will have much more RAM and hard drive space than your normal computer.
