Is it possible for a man to adopt his girlfriends daughter before they get married? We plan on getting married but not for another year. He's know my daughter since she was a year old and she wll be 14 in a few months. I would like her to start High School with her name changed but don't know if he can adopt her without us getting married.

There is no father in her life he never wanted to be there since day one. I've raised her on my own all these years. She wants my boyfriend to adopt her she talks about it all the time. He has no children of his own.

You need to call an attorney, where I live at you have to be married first. My husband (boyfriend at the time) wanted to adopt my two girls, but our attorney told us we had to be married first. You will need to have her birth fathers rights taken away first, which will be very easy since he has had no contact with her.

No, you have to be married in order to do this. Just to show to the courts that he will be the sole father of this child. Then change her name. She will forever be his daughter, no matter what. Even if she is 15 when you marry, he can still adopt her and have her name changed. Have you thought about getting married sooner than a year? Good Luck

Probably not, despite the fact that Brad and Angelina seem to have done it (or at least applied for it), but then again, they’re Brad and Angelina. I believe he filed as a second parent (as opposed to an stepparent) and it meant A LOT more paperwork, time, and money. Even if your state allowed that (and I don’t believe most do, but I certainly could be wrong), it would be MUCH less stressful, time-consuming, and expensive to wait until you get married and file as a stepparent adoption. And, assuming your daughter will start high school this fall--that’s probably not enough time for a ‘second parent’ adoption to go through anyway.
