Take a high quality name brand comprehensive multi- vitamin/mineral supplement. Everyone should, because people don't know the nutritional content of the food they ate.

The ones made from "food" are best. This is now even being backed by the AMA.
"One a day" products are made from synthetic chemicals that are not exactly the same as the real vitamins you find in food or supplements made from foods.
<< JOURNAL OF AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION SAYS SYNTHETIC SUPPLEMENTS ARE DANGEROUS
Last week, major news publications reported on a peer-reviewed study from the Journal of the American Medical Association which found that a number of synthetic vitamins appear to be damaging the health of consumers. The meta-analysis indicated that the synthetic form of Vitamin A increased death risk by 16%, beta carotene by 7% and Vitamin E by 4%. The results for Vitamin C were not so clear, but by looking at the best quality trials there was a suggestion that it increased death risk by 6%, either on its own or in combination with other supplements. The study adds further fuel to the Organic Consumers Association's (OCA) new "Nutri-Con" campaign, which is designed to help educate consumers about the benefits of food-based vitamins and to stop fraudulent labeling of synthetic vitamins and supplements as "natural". >>

The very best ones I found are Arbonne's Hybrids for Men or for Women. They are so complete and the Men's include a supplement that promotes prostate health as well as a digestive enzyme, multivitamins, and multiminerals. It is the most complete. If you were to go to GNC to get all of the Nutrients that are in this one pack, it would cost you over $300! It also has an ORAC score of 8,000. GNC's package only has an ORAC of 4,000.

Most of the vitamins sold are synthetic and your body will reject them as waste. You need a natural whole food vitamin that your body will recognize as food.Visit www.dna911.info and check out a natural supplement called Nutra-Maxxxx.It is a unique blend of bio-available ingredients synergistically combined to provide an extremely potent vitamin, mineral and super antioxidant formulation.

If extending your good looks is all your after, than you need more than multivitamins. Good health is more than making your skin look pretty. You need to take a much deeper look at the whole picture. Sorry Shallow Hal, you're asking the wrong question.

Hi Muskaan
Lots of differing views given to you in the answers above. I worked in the supplement industry so I know how it all works.
The latest buzz word in the industry is "whole food" supplements. You don't need whole food supplements - just eat 'whole foods'- then you'll get all those extra phtyonutrients that scientists haven't yet discovered. Whole food supplements are a way for manufacturers to charge more and make more profit!
Most supplements including the very best in the market use synthetic vitamins and minerals and the supplement you take should (mostly) consist of these.
The facts regarding synthetics versus natural are as follows:
“Natural” means substances in their indigenous, unaltered state and coming directly from a plant, food or animal.
* Fact: Sourcing vitamins in this way is extremely expensive and requires significant chemical processing.
* Fact: Many natural ingredients are biologically unstable – especially when they are removed from the food source - they must be stabilized with materials such as hydrochloride, sulphates, KCl, or incorporated into stabilizing matrices etc.
They are much more susceptible to contamination during manufacture and properties such as color, appearance and potency can vary considerably from one batch to the next - as can the macronutrient chemical composition.
* “Synthetic” means substances that begin either as a natural source (natural precursors) or as inorganic chemicals, and have been chemically synthesized in a laboratory.
* Fact: Synthetics are the same as vitamins/minerals from natural sources – your body cannot distinguish between a 'synthetic' compound and a 'natural' compound of identical structure. Also their use and efficacy in the body is identical.
* Fact: Synthetic isolates are cheaper, far easier to work with and quicker to manufacture than natural ingredients - hence their widespread use.
* Fact: Less reputable companies succumb to the financial pressure to use synthetic forms in cases when the natural form has been proven to be better and should be used.
When determining the source for vitamins and minerals, a quality supplement company will conform to well accepted scientific evidence which shows that one vitamin form is preferable over another. This guarantees ingredients which are best absorbed and utilized in your body.
So in many cases it’s absolutely better to use synthetic ingredients. This is to achieve sufficient levels of purity, potency, safety, dosage and bioavailibility which cannot be achieved with materials from natural sources.
Example: Folic acid - the synthetic form is almost always used in supplements as it is preferentially absorbed and used over natural food folates in your body.
There are a few vitamins with extensive scientific research that validates the natural form as more advantageous than the synthetic form.
E.G. Vitamin E and Beta Carotene. Make sure the supplement you takes contains natural vitamin E and beta carotene.
Someone mentioned in their answer to you above about the recent JAMA article on a meta study which has received world-wide media coverage over the last couple of weeks (about the supposed dangers of certain nutrients in supplements).
There were (the usual) sensational headlines like "vitamins will kill you". Please follow the second link below to a page that will put that whole story in perspective for you.
To achieve and maintain good health which will reflect in your skin tone, hair etc you need to take in the necessary micronutrients on a daily basis which your body needs for correct functioning. It's that simple (in theory) but of course due to numerous reasons (lifestyle/environmental/nutritional) most of us dont achieve that. Hence supplementation helps.
Being stress free is absolutely vital to the good health equation - so make sure you examine your health from a holistic perspective - make sure you are happy and free. The body is the greatest self healer in the world when it is stress free (examine the word disease - dis/ease = not at ease).
So you need a supplement with a little of everything (particularly key high potency phytonutrients and herbal extracts along with LOW TO MODERATE amounts of vitamins and minerals) so it can tackle and balance all major systems and organs in your body including your hormonal cascade - so it must be gender specific (aimed either at women and containing hormonal precursor herbs or aimed at men and containing support nutrients for prostate health etc etc ). When everything is correct nourished and balanced not only will you feel light and energetic but your skin will glow and your hair will really shine. Remember your outer state reflects your inner state.
The supplement I have taken for the past years has 83 ingredients and helps achieve total balance inside. I havent been sick one day in the past 6 years. I'm 43 years old - and a tennis coach specializing in high performance players so energy and good health are critical to my work performance.
My time working in the supplement industry allowed me the opportunity to research supplements and understand the science behind them. Thats how I tracked down the one I use now.
Use the first resource link below to get the details (the page in question is down until 15th March) but you can access it after that.
