I'm hand sewing the quilt top and made my own stencils for quilt motifs. I don't want to damage the quilt I've worked so hard on.

I'm doing the same thing! Walmart makes a great pen that fades with time (2 - 3 minutes) for lighter fabrics (only costs a couple of bucks) and is a purple color. I'm also using chalk and a Q-Tip inside my stencils for dark fabric. Washes off with a damp rag. Good Luck on yours!

I use regular chalk on all of my sewing projects. You can get a box of childrens chalk in different colors and have the best color available when you need it. Cheaper than tailors markers (and better). The chalk brushes off easily. I've never had a problem with permanent marks.

They make special quilt markers that wash out. Check out the Joanns website; also try www.clotilde.com

There are special pencils that you can use and also my grandmother had this marker years ago for marking on fabric that after it was dry faded away. Go to a fabric store and see what they have now.
