Can I search using Google or another engine for just "excel spreadsheets containing the words..." or "Word documents containing the words...?"

Yes, for example if you wanted to search for zoology in all power point files you would do:

"zoology filetype:ppt"

yes, just by using the advanced search in Google.

Click the advanced search link and then select file format = excel spreadsheets or Microsoft word etc etc

Sure ... I do it all the time.
Just add the extension to the file name if necessary.

For example :

"filename".xls
or
"filename".doc
