5x + 2y = - 23- - - - - - - Equation 1
2x + y = - 10- - - - - - - - Equation 2
- - - - - - - - - -

Substitute Method equation 2

2x + y = - 10

2x + y - 2x = - 2x - 10

y = - 2x - 10

Insert the y value into euation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

5x + 2y = - 23

5x + 2(- 2x - 10) = - 23

5x + (- 4x - 20) = - 23

5x - 4x - 20 = - 23

x - 20 = - 23

x - 20 + 20 = - 23 + 20

x = - 3

Insert the x value into equation 2

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

2x + y = - 10

2(- 3) + y = - 10

- 6 + y = - 10

- 6 + y + 6 = - 10 + 6

y = - 4

Insert the y value into equation 2

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for equation 2

2x + y = - 10

2(- 3) + (- 4) = - 10

- 6 - 4 = - 10

- 10 = - 10

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for equation 1

5x + 2y = - 23

5(- 3) + 2(- 4) = - 23

- 15 + (- 8) = - 23

- 15 - 8 = - 23

- 23 = - 23

So OK. Rewrite the equations as
y = (-5/2)x - 23/2 and
y = -2x - 10 and graph them. They should intersect at the point (-3, -4)

using simultaneous eqs.
5x + 2y = -23 ......1
2x + y = -10 ......2

multiplying eq 2 with 2

you get
5x + 2y = -23
4x + 2y = -20

subtracting the two eqs

5x + 2y = -23
4x + 2y = -20
(-) (-) (+)

x = 3

substituting x = 3 in eq 2,

6 + y = -10
which leads to-
y = -16
