Apparently a lot. We can't use that word any more but we'll continue to be called crackers. Go figure.

If you are anything but black, nothing. It's just a word.

If you are black (maybe even just American black, I'm not sure about other countries), the "n word" means so much more to you than just a word, even if you pretend it doesn't. It's jarring to hear, eye-opening, and sad. Especially since most of the time, it is unexpected, a sudden reduction from a Person to a very ugly label, a subhuman, substandard animal.

I have wondered this myself. I think it's just a fashion thing, and currently this word is causing havoc, and has become a derogatory term. In fact, until fairly recently in UK it was perfectly ok to refer to anything which was a dark brown colour as "n" brown. Though I can understand that in America, with your history, that this would be considered more offensive.
