Check out Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. She's got oodles of Pern books out, and she's one of the top sci-fi writers in the business. Maybe also look into The Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan.

I would say The Hollow Kingdom, by Clare B. Dunkle. It's actually a trilogy, but the first book in the series is most definitely my fave. I don't know if you'll like it or not, but it is something new, well written, and definitely worth a try! I'm not real big on Earthsea though... it just never appealed to me.

And I've gotta agree with the Dragonriders of Pern. That's another awesome choice.

Is it too terrible to recommend Harry Potter? If you haven't read the series, it is worth the time 1000%.

Suggestions:

Icewind Dale Trilogy: R.A. Salvatore (or anything else by him, Icewind Dale Trilogy is the start of an ongoing with one of his characters)
Anything by Margret Weis or Tracy Hickman
Wheel of Time set: Robert Jordan

Really anything Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance (you don't have to like dungeons and dragons to read the books!)

Good authors to check into...

David Eddings
Terry Goodkind
Robert Jordan
Tad Williams
Anne McCaffery

Most of these are found in the adult science fiction section, but a few are cross-filed in the Teen Fiction section. David Eddings is generally teen-acceptable, but the others may occasionally have more mature themes.
