I have had this discussion with a few people and have gotten different answers. I want to know what a majority of people think; If you spend a lot of time with a person other than your spouse and your spouse isn't aware of it or you kissed a person other than your spouse is it adultry?

No, sexual intercourse is required for it to be adultery.
: voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband.
All the religious BS around it is just that. The act of adultery requires intercourse.

I consider adultery to be a very specific term meaning, "voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse." Consequently, in order to qualify as adultery, there must be actual fuking, boinking, or otherwise penile penetration of the vaginal orifice. What you are describing, spending too much time and kissing, falls into the meaning of the generally-accepted phrase, "emotional affair".

Both are bad, and both can end relationships. All I'm saying is that "adultery" carries a very specific definition.

A very wise Jewish carpenter once said "You have heard it is written 'Thou shalt not commit adultery.' But I say unto you that any man who looks upon a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart. If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better to enter the Kingdom of Heaven without one of your eyes than to have the whole body committed to Hell."

BOTTOM LINE: If you're doing things with another member of the opposite sex that you should really be doing with your spouse, there's a serious problem. A legalist will tell you that it's only adultery if you have sex with another man or woman, but someone who understands marriage and how God intended marriage to work will tell you that spending time with someone other than your spouse or kissing a person other than your spouse is every bit as much a betrayal of your marriage vows as the act of adultery.

Despite what some of the other responses were i don't think it has to be sex to be adultery. Yes, maybe according to the dictionary is has too be, but i don't think the dictionary should be the final word on an issue like this. You can cheat on your spouse as much with your mind as you can your body. Don't be fooled that it is "ok" as long as it's not sex. Those people are trying to justify something.

No, not technically. But your spouse might not feel like being so "technical" about it!! My husband is smart enough not to tell me things like that now and he's getting old enough and close enough for me to guess just about what he's thinking!!
If you are thinking too much about a certain person and cheating with them, maybe you better back off for your own good before it becomes a reality or an embarrassment!! @8-)

You know it is....Yes....adultery is not always physical contact...Having an emotional relationship is the same...in most cases even worse. Why are you married if you kissing someone else and spending time with this person and not your spouse?

Yes.

Why are so many people willing to give up on their marriages and have affairs? Maybe you need to stop spending time with this other person and start investing it into your spouse....then maybe you'd find happiness in your marriage.

The bible says that even lusting after someone is adultery. Keep your eyes fixed on the person you exchanged vows with and remember those vows often. They weren't meant to be taken lightly.

Yes, if youwouldnt do it in front of your spouse or if you wouldnt like it if your spouse was doing it behind your back...I consider it cheating. There are many different types of affairs and sometimes the most damaging one do not involve sex at all.

There has to be actual intercourse for it to be considered adultry. I have looked this one up myself. Just do a dictionary search for adultry it gives a full description.

I feel if you make the other person even think that something could go on between the two of you then it is adultery. Now in the court of law you would actually have to be caught in the act. Here in the state of NC, you have be living with that person in order for it to be adultery.
