20gallons.

I mean, it can have more and I'm sure I would like more if I were him, but 20gals would be a nice, decent size. I know many people who keep them in 5gal tanks, and thats too cruel.

If you have space/money, get a 30gal breeder tank, its long and low and will give your snake something to do. With that much space, he'll be entertained for a while.

I have 2 in a 20 gallon. Even though they they are long, they are thin and can curl up in the palm of your hand. I have a 6 x 10 drawer organizer filled with water for a pool/feeding dish, 2 resin logs (their hides), some flexible reptile vine hung by suction cups, some silk vine wrapped around this, an upright branch to support the middle, some coconut fiber substrate, and a piece of shale under the basking lamp (by the pool so they don't get the coconut fiber in the water).

If you have one, you could keep it in a 10 gallon, but a 20 give it more room and a greater range of temperature form warm to coll is possible.

I have a brother & sister from the same litter of four years ago in a 40 gal. low. The male is about 4 1/2 ft & the female is about 3ft. long & they've been together everyday of their lives, starting off in a 10gal, then a 20gal. long & now the 40. The 20 gal. long tank is all you'll ever really need for one garter & it'll have plenty of room to crawl & hide.

Get yourself a 22-38 gallon reptarium. It's lightweight, it's inexpensive, and you can throw the mesh in the washing machine to clean it, which is much easier than glass.

If you go with glass, 20 long is a good size for an adult garter. (he will grow, y'know) The bigger the better, though, if you can afford larger, go for it.

If you really love your snake, how much satisfaction do you get knowing that it will never live the life of a real snake?
Being fed rats and stuff that are already dead. Thats not natural.
Must be so boring living in a glass tank.
I love horses, but I wouldn't keep one in my back garden.
