If the religion exists in a free and equal society where having no religion is also a valid option, yes. When one religion becomes intolerant it is detrimental to society because it creates a group think atmosphere where creativity and advanced ideas are stifled by dogma. In a free society however, many types of religions can exist, mostly with positive resluts, as they support things such as charity, morality, community support and social connections to help reinforce social bonds. The key to keeping religion a positive experience is allowing diversity so that individuals can find the right path for themselves or even feel free to forge their own if need be.

Religion is used to opiate the masses. That's why many countries allow religion to share equal power with government. Take a country like Iran where if people have a problem there are no social services. The people are told to pray five times a day for for a solution. The problem is that religion is also a source of power and many abuse it in the name of God.

On average, religious people are happier and have stronger relationships. So is it helpful? Yes. Is it relevant? As scientists discover the reasons that religion promotes mental health, it will become less relevant. The average atheist who fills his her life with meaningful goals, strong relationships and service to others will experience the same mental health benefits as the average religious person.

conventional religion was one of the worst things to happen to mankind. There is no "right or wrong" in religion. If sometimes people would stop being told what to think, and made up their own "religion"so to speak, wouldn't there be so much more peace?

I agree with all the previous answers regarding religion. What counts is Christianity. Accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour and see how your whole outlook on life changes for the better. Forget religion.

Nope and Nope. Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.
All religions are founded on the fears of the many and the cleverness of the few!

Religion is used to control us, because everyone has a fear of God and his wrath. If it wasn't for religion we would be at war all the time because no one would fear death and the after life.

like science it's a tool for good or bad. it depends on how people interpret the texts, and what texts. you may find religious Christians for capitalism, neoconservatives, and against it, Latin American theology of liberation.
religion is still effective but less than the middle ages. the Iranian revolution, 9/11, president Bush who hears voices in his head and thinks it's god.
