It comes from opera. There always seems to be a larger woman singer and you know the show is not over until this larger woman sings.

most operas are LONG and BORING and just when you think it is over they start up with another section.

historically the finale is sung by the soprano diva and many of them are quite overweight. so the picture is the fat lady is singing so it is the finale!
