socialist = democratt
democratt = socialist
same thing to me. The "progressive" era was only progressive for those who wanted to progress towards socialism. And unfortunately, today we are still stuck with massive entitlement programs that our birthrates can no longer support. It's effects are seen in todays politics in the form of all the "third rails" that no one has the guts to touch. It is now draining us dry. How are our kids ever going to be able to pay enough taxes to pay for all us baby boomers as we sit on our shriveled butts watching TV in the retirement home lobby? In the so-called "progressive Era, contrary to what hollywood would have you believe, there WERE (and still are) commie sympathizers working to undermine American politics. And the ultimate prize achieved by them was the establishment within our borders of that nest of socialists known as the UN.
Problem is, socialism is a flawed, failed concept. It assumes that humans are not motivated by self-interest. Sorry, but GOD didn't wire us that way. Even God knows that the best way to motivate someone out of sloth and poverty is to give them something to strive for themselves. He gave the Israelites a promised land. He gives everyone a reason to be charitable and live a moral life with the promise of a pleasant afterlife as an individual soul.
Socialism guarantees equal misery. Capitalism guarantees unequal wealth, but even the poor are better off in a capitalistic society. In countries that have forced socialism on their citizens, the poor are starving. In America, the poor have an obesity problem from too many daily calories and too much time in front of their DVD players. Think about that for awhile.

There is no such thing as democratic socialism. Socialism means centralized control over economic life - it means the subjugation of the individual to the state. The only true democracy is the market - the consumers decide the allocation of resources.
And if you look up your history, minimum wage was put in place to keep blacks from getting construction jobs in Long Island. Read the legislative history behind the Davis-Bacon Act - nobody made any bones about it. It was several years until someone actually suggested a price floor on labor magically lifted people's wages.

A lot of the ideals the Socialist promoted....were eventually put into law by the Republicans and Democrats.
Social security, minimum wage, healthcare for the poor(medicare) were Socialist ideas.
The idea of "Socialism" scared many Americans, so the party faded away, BUT their ideas live on.
