I think a true icon is somebody who generally chooses good roles, acts them amazingly well, and presents themselves in a good manner off-screen. A bit of mystery seems to help as well.

High Morals and standards. Always being a lady or a gentleman whether in the presence of the public or behind closed doors. Too many people let fame go to their head and ruin their careers. Being unwaivering and setting an example for all to see is something that is not seen too much anymore. Especially the younger generation seems to think they can do whatever they want and not have to deal with the consequences. That is setting a terrible example for our upcoming youth. They should realize they are in a prime spot to set an good example and be able to go down in the books as a TRUE ICON.

An impact on society so big that everyone knows who you are. **don't confuse this with fame** I mean like Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. Abraham Lincoln and the issue of slavery. Those guys were true icons. Transcending time,race,politics,etc....
