If it was moving, then the head would be on it, which would make it pretty much impossible to use any measurement devices.

If the head wasn't on it, it wouldn't be moving, and you could measure it a number of ways.

If it WAS moving with the head off, then you'd have to have something that would keep the measurement device pressed against the top of the cylinder head, then a calibrated eyeball to see the mark on the measuring device. You could set up a strobe to do this, firing at the peak of piston travel with a camera to catch the reading.

It would be easier to shut it off and fill the cylinder out of a flask filled to a certain measured level, then subtract what you have left.

Essentially you are measuring the difference between the volumes of 'two' cylinders, one cylinder is small when the Piston is at top dead centre (TDC) and the other cylinder is larger when the Piston is at Bottom Dead Centre (BDC) the difference between the two is the displacement in one cylinder of the engine, as you measure the same cylinder twice.

It would be easier to measure, or look up, the bore and stroke of the cylinder. When the piston is not moving, of course.

measure the swing of your piston, then find the radius, multiply by 3.14.

Pie are squared times stroke. where are is half the bore diameter.

the same way you measure displacement of the letter 'i' in your question. also, what about the absence of the letter 'a' in displacement?
