I not have Vista but have studied it to help people I know.
Microsoft say a minimum of 512 MB AND!!!! Some things may not be available. Most everyone agree 1 GB should do well under most computer applications. I say just over time upgrade to MAX out on RAM.
Now, another thing Vista can do for you is use a Flash Drive as Virtual Memory. It helps work a little faster than the Hard Drive as VM, but, it not as Fast as RAM. So, if you have a jump drive laying around use it, I not sure buying one for VM be cheaper than regular RAM but shop around. Now go here and read about it, if you not know;

I run both my laptop and my desktop with vista and only 1 GB of RAM. I haven't noticed any slow down. If you have any large "needy" programs you might think about upgrading past 1GB, but if you don't then save your money.

Thanks,
Charlie
