I am 39 weeks and 6 days, 3 cm and 60% effaced. This is my 3rd baby. At my doctors appointment yesterday, they stripped my membranes and I was sent home. In the meantime, I lost my mucous plug. 4 hours later I started having contractions every 12-15 minutes like clock work for the next 8 hours. I ended up trying to sleep and woke up everytime the contractions were unbearable. However, by morning the contractions have subsided. If the contractions weren't so intense I would have thought they were braxton hicks (but they were much more painful than the one's I had previously). Is it possible for labor to stop?

I had this happen a lot when I was due with my 3rd child, too. I'd contract for a long while and just as I was ready to call the doctor, they'd stop... she ended up being 9 days overdue!! They were REAL contractions, they just weren't convincing my cervix to open up.

If you want, the next time it happens like that, go to the hospital. I'm sure they'd do something to encourage the labor along, like breaking your water because you are already dilated some. I didn't dilate until I was in active labor. Good luck!!

It is absolutely possible for labor to stop. Just try and relax, everything will be fine. Don't let the doctors rush you. Remember what your parents told you when the cat was about ready to have kittens?? - Leave her alone! Get some privacy and maybe lay down and get some rest. You will need it for the work ahead! Your baby will come when he or she is ready.

Yes, labor can stop.

My doctor said that most women get stronger contractions at night, normally after 11 pm.

But, I bet you had stronger ones, because of the stripping.
