Create a diversion. Distract yourself from the emotional situation. When you feel yourself starting to well up, go to the refrigerator for a snack or go to the bathroom and fiddle with your hair until the urge passes. Better yet, close the door and let them flow.

It's great that you can cry. You are in touch with your emotions which makes you a sensitive and caring person. When you get past the "can't shed a tear" phase of life, you'll find that it's a good, not a bad quality.

Don't deny yourself this gift. For many years i believed it was a statement of manhood when i could control my emotional softness and not let myself be touched by moments such as these. Something happened to me 13 yrs ago that caused a radical alteration in my mind and the way i percieve things and , as a result of that "spiritual awakening" i am now freed of the old delusion that crying is something that only women do. If that is true, then why were men given tear ducts just like women are??
Besides, tears can be cleansing, tears can unify those experiencing similar emotional distress ; tears can cleanse the pain from a wounded soul, tears can express tenderness at being touched by scene in a movie, a daughter walking down the aisle, etc, etc, etc.
If we deny ourselves this gift the we aren't moving toward the truth of what we are, thus causing us to hold back our own spiritual progress and bringing the discord of denial about within us.

Well, I don't know, but I think that it is okay to tear up when our emotions are touched in such a way. I always wonder about the people who don't!!!! I even get tears in my eyes when something is extremely happy. Being sensitive to the plights of others, even if it is just a movie shows that one has fellow-feeling, empathy. That is a marvelous quality. I know that it can be embarrasing if you are in the wrong crowd (where others are hardened to feelings) but maybe just be careful who you watch movies like that with. Be happy that you have those wonderful feelings of empathy, and don't worry about the tears...they help to remind us that we are human!

I am glad to hear that you cry when listening to a sad story or when watching sad movies!

It means you are a sensitive and uninhibited person.

I personally try to keep back my tears, only if I must not ruin my make-up.!! In all other cases, I tear heartily!

Yes, but only by distracting yourself by thinking of something else. I do not want to stifle my emotions myself because I am a woman and I have a right to cry plus I enjoy it at times. Tears are a welcome release for me. That's why Hollywood churns out sad movies. Many things are made to elicit our sad emotions. If tears are embarrassing you though, distract yourself with thoughts of a serious or problematic nature. Good Luck!! @8-)

Quietly make sarcastic remarks about what you're reading and then it will be funny instead of sad.

But your "problem" may not be a real problem. The behavior you describe is characteristic of people with very strong empathy (a very good human emotion in most circumstances). I suppose there are times when you'd want to turn your empathy off, however, like when a kid in time out is screaming that he/she wants to get out.

Well, why would you try to overcome a very natural human reaction? Unless of course you are laughing so hard to a sad story then you should be alarmed.

Don't, it is one of those small things in life to enjoy, even if you partner or friends laughs at you.

imagine the person the story/movie doing something funny, like dancing in his underwear.
OR you could just keep thinking "it's not real, it's not real, it's not real"
