Is hormone pills similar to birth control pills?

As in the side effects of it. cos my fren ate hormone pills to clear up her pimples / acnes and it worked. so is birth control pills de same? And, does hormone pills have the same side effect as BC pills, that is, it kills the eggs sumting like dat?
